Not many financial leaders end up on a Hollywood film set, but Perminder has never been one to stay in a box. In 2018, he signed on as Executive Producer with DNA Films® – Hollywood’s Emmy® Award-winning production studio stepping onto set, attending principal photography and being part of the storytelling process firsthand. His debut film, Folds of Honor (2020), told the deeply moving story of Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot who built a foundation providing scholarships to families of fallen American soldiers. The documentary went on to win two Emmy® Awards – for Best Director and Best Editor, and holds an outstanding 8.7 rating on IMDb. For Perminder, it wasn’t about the awards, it was about telling a story that truly mattered.
After the success of Folds of Honor, Perminder knew he had found something special in documentary filmmaking. In 2020, he flew to San Diego and joined the DNA Films® crew on set for his next project – It’s Happening Right Here (2022). This time the subject was far darker, human trafficking and the more than 300,000 American minors lured into the sex trade every year. Being physically present on set, sitting in on interviews with Tim Ballard, the founder of Operation Underground Railroad, and touring the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, it changed Perminder deeply. Then came The Truth About Reading (2024), a subject closer to everyday life but equally shocking. The film exposed how millions of adults across America cannot read, and how children are falling behind from their very first years of school. It went on to win the Gold Telly Award – one of the most respected honours in film and television production. Two very different stories, but for Perminder both came from the same place. A quiet, unshakeable belief that if you have a platform, you have a responsibility to use it for good.
